If I asked what you wanted to do this weekend, you’d probably say something fun. Learning case interviews is probably not on that list.
Unfortunately, case interviews are hard.
Very hard.
They are partly why top consulting firms only give offers to 1% of people. Most people spend 6-8 weeks learning case interviews. Weekends are spent reading case books and casing with partners.
Sadly, most people won’t receive any consulting offers. Why?
Is it because they aren’t smart? Is it because they don’t work hard? Or is it because they haven’t read enough books?
The answer is none of these.
Let me explain.
I’m going to share with you the three critical mistakes 90% of people make when learning case interviews. Regardless of whether you choose to learn case interviews with me, I guarantee you’ll benefit from reading this to the end.
If you can avoid making these mistakes, you’ll save yourself hundreds of hours and some painful rejection emails.
Why listen to me?
I’m Taylor Warfield, a former Bain Manager and interviewer.
I’ve interviewed hundreds of students and working professionals. I’m the author of Hacking the Case Interview, the #2 best-selling case interview book on Amazon last year. 25,000+ copies have been sold.
I have a YouTube channel with nearly 50K subscribers and 3M views.
But enough about me.
Before all this, I was once in your shoes, an aspiring consultant trying to break into consulting. I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas hunkered in a Starbucks, grinding out 10 cases day.
After many rejections and two years of interviewing, I received a delightful phone call from a Bain Partner at 11PM while folding laundry.
Throughout this two-year journey, I realized just how much time I had wasted preparing for case interviews the wrong way.
It was not just me.
I was doing exactly what 90% of people do when learning case interviews.
Fast forward to today, I want you to learn from my mistakes.
I want to help save you hundreds of hours of prep time. I want to help you avoid getting those dreaded rejection emails. I want to help you get your weekends and holidays back.
So read on.
Critical mistake #1
If you ask anyone how they are learning case interviews, they’ll most likely say they are reading Case in Point or Case Interview Secrets.
Back in 2014, I read both of these books. While you can certainly learn a lot from these, reading them is no longer enough to land you an offer at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain.
These books were written 20 years ago.
Since then, competition for consulting has increased. The average case interview skill level has increased. Interviewers are now very familiar with the strategies in these books.
If you want average results, you’ll do what the average person does.
You’re not going to impress any interviewers by just reading these books. You’re going to need more robust and unique strategies.
Critical mistake #2
Imagine you’re back in high school and have an upcoming math exam.
To prepare, you find random math problems scattered all over the internet.
Now imagine you have a friend, Alex. He finds the exact math exam that your specific teacher has given over the past 5 years.
Who do you think is going to do better on the exam while also spending less time?
Alex, of course!
Alex will know exactly what material is covered, the types of questions asked, and the format of the exam.
The best way to study for a math exam is to study previous versions of the actual exam.
When it comes to case interviews, but you should be practicing with real interview cases that were given in previous years.
Critical mistake #3
If you’re new to case interviews, you’re probably so excited to get started that you’ll do mock case interviews with anyone.
Your friend. Your mom. Even your mailman if they were willing.
While practicing is good, who you practice with matters. It’s the difference between needing to do 10 cases or 100 cases to get better.
If you practice with beginners that don’t know what they are doing, you’re going to get a mediocre experience and mediocre feedback.
This is like the blind leading the blind.
Instead, if you practice with former McKinsey, BCG, or Bain interviewers, you’re going to get a more realistic interview experience along with valuable feedback.
Doing a single case with a former consulting interviewer is like doing 10 cases with a beginner.
And finally...
...now that you know these three major mistakes, here comes the good part.
There must be a better way
I made all three of these critical mistakes when learning case interviews.
While I did eventually land my dream job offer, it took me two years and I had spent hundreds of hours. There needs to be a better way to learn case interviews, right?
I created this case interview course to help you avoid making these mistakes and save hundreds of hours of time.
First, the course teaches the exact strategies I developed and used to land multiple consulting offers. These strategies are extremely robust and can be used in any case. They don't rely on pure memorization, but instead teach you how to think like a consultant.
Most importantly, these are proven strategies that are guaranteed to work.
Using these strategies will help you stand out from everyone else relying on Case in Point or Case Interview Secrets.
Second, the course includes 20 cases based on real interviews given at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain in previous years. If you can nail these cases, you can nail any consulting firms' interviews.
Third, the course does not require having a case partner. No more practicing with beginners!
All cases are structured to be completed on your own while still providing a realistic interview experience. I provide a 50-point comprehensive checklist that you can use to assess your performance. This is the exact checklist I use when people pay me for one-on-one coaching.
Each case has the exact framework and solutions that I would give in an interview. So, you can see exactly how a Bain interviewer solves cases.
But beyond these benefits, there is one more that my 30,000+ enrolled students really appreciate.
Let me explain.
Getting your weekends and holidays back
In this course, I have nailed the art of learning case interviews down to a science. You can make significant improvements in as little as a week.
I’ll walk you through exactly what you need to do and say in every step of the case interview. I’ll give you the 20 cases to practice that covers almost every single type of case interview.
You’ll spend 5 hours learning case interviews and 10-20 hours practicing depending on your skill level.
That’s it.
Why spend hundreds of hours learning case interviews when it can be done in less time?
I’ve had some students pass their McKinsey first-round interviews with just a week of preparation. I’ve had other customers take their time and finish the course in 10 weeks, spending just 1-3 hours a week.
Whether your interview is tomorrow or in a few months, this is the fastest, most efficient way to learn case interviews.
This is how you can get your free time back so you can return to enjoying life.
So, what will this cost you?
You may be thinking: this all sounds great, but how much does this course cost?
At top consulting firms, the total compensation for an entry-level position is $125,000. For a mid-level position, it’s $220,000.
Would you be willing to give up 10% of this total compensation to get an offer at these firms? That would equal $12,500 - $22,000.
Other companies try to pitch this and sell their case interview prep packages for something crazy like $6,000.
Ouch!
No one should be paying that much.
My course is less than 5% or 1/20th of that. For $299, you’ll get access to my course for a full year. Afterwards, you can cancel your subscription or renew if you’d like.
I’ll be honest, this is not the cheapest resource out there. Case interview books cost $20-30, using Google is free, and watching YouTube videos doesn’t cost you a penny.
While you can certainly use these cheaper resources, the tradeoff is that you’re going to spend much more time.
Trust me, this is exactly what I had done back in 2014.
This $299 course will save you at least 100 hours of prep time. Think of it this way: you’re getting back 100 hours of your time for $2.99/hour. If you offered me this back in 2014, I’d take it in an instant.
But don’t just take my word for it.
But wait, there’s more?
There’s one more thing I want to offer you.
So read on.
I want to give you the very best customer service by giving you direct access to me. If you have any questions or issues, you can email me directly at [email protected].
